Gokyo Lakes and Ri Trek, Nepal

Gokyo Lakes & Ri Trek — 14 Days

The Gokyo Lakes & Ri Trek is the finest alternative to Everest Base Camp in the Khumbu region — quieter on the trail, more dramatic at the viewpoint, and built around one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Himalayan world. The route leads deep into the Gokyo Valley, past a chain of six sacred turquoise glacial lakes between 4,700m and 5,000m, to the summit of Gokyo Ri at 5,357m — a viewpoint that delivers a simultaneous panorama of four 8,000-metre peaks: Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m).

Unlike Kala Patthar on the classic EBC route, Gokyo Ri offers Everest unobstructed — a full profile of the mountain’s western shoulder, rather than the restricted glimpse visible between Nuptse and Lhotse from the standard viewpoint. Many experienced Khumbu trekkers rate the Gokyo Ri sunrise as the single finest mountain view available on foot in Nepal.

The trek passes through the heart of Sagarmatha National Park alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier — Nepal’s longest glacier at over 36km — and through traditional Sherpa villages where Hillary-era teahouses still stand beside satellite dishes. Summit Routes runs this as a fully guided 14-day programme from Kathmandu, with all permits, Lukla flights, guide, and porter support included.
