Asia's largest Tulip Garden in Srinagar-Kashmir. Tulips bloom in March-April

Majestic Kashmir Tour — Culture, Heritage & Beauty

The Majestic Kashmir Tour is Summit Routes’ most complete introduction to the Kashmir Valley — a 7-day private journey that takes in all four of the valley’s principal destinations: Srinagar (the city, the lake, the Mughal gardens, and the old Islamic quarter), Pahalgam (the Lidder Valley and its meadow side-valleys), Gulmarg (the Gondola and the high meadow), and Sonamarg (the golden glacial valley at the head of the Sind corridor). The programme covers more geographical ground than the 9-day Explore Kashmir tour while keeping the pace comfortable — it is designed to give a first-time Kashmir visitor a confident understanding of the valley’s scale and character rather than an exhaustive immersion in any single area.

Kashmir operates differently across its four seasons and the character of this tour changes substantially depending on when you travel. In spring (March–April) the Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden above Dal Lake — Asia’s largest tulip garden, pictured above — is in full bloom alongside the orchards of Pahalgam. In summer (June–August) the meadows of Pahalgam and the Gulmarg slopes are at their greenest. In autumn (September–October) the chinar trees that line the Mughal Gardens and the Srinagar boulevards turn gold and orange in one of the most striking seasonal colour changes in India. In winter (December–February) Gulmarg is India’s premier ski destination, accessible on this tour as a stand-alone day, with the Gondola running to the Apharwat snowfields. Summit Routes is based in Srinagar and runs this tour year-round with licensed Kashmiri guides.

Tour Highlights

  • Dal Lake Shikara & Houseboat Stay — the iconic experience of arriving in Srinagar and stepping onto a shikara (traditional wooden boat) for an evening glide across Dal Lake, with the Zabarwan hills reflected in the water. The houseboat or hotel stay on the Boulevard gives direct lake access for each of the three Srinagar nights.
  • Pahalgam & the Lidder Valley — a pine-shaded river town at 2,130m that serves as the gateway to some of Kashmir’s finest mountain scenery. Betaab Valley (lush meadow, used as a Bollywood film location), Chandanwari (narrow gorge at the head of the Lidder, start of the Amarnath pilgrimage route), and Aru Valley — all reachable in Day 3.
  • Gulmarg Gondola — Phase 1 & 2 — the cable car rises from the Gulmarg meadow (2,650m) to Kongdoori (3,100m) in Phase 1 and then to the Apharwat Ridge (3,980m) in Phase 2. Phase 2 is the highest accessible point on this tour and gives an extraordinary view across the Pir Panjal range with Nanga Parbat visible on the northwestern horizon on clear days. Weather dependent.
  • Sonamarg — the Golden Meadow — a full-day excursion to the valley at the head of the Sind River corridor, where the Thajiwas Glacier descends to the meadow floor and the surrounding ridgelines hold snow year-round. Pony rides to the glacier snout are available on arrival. The drive from Srinagar follows the Sind River through some of the most forested mountain road terrain in the Kashmir Valley.
  • Srinagar Heritage Circuit — the full Mughal Gardens sequence (Nishat, Chashma Shahi, Pari Mahal) and the Old City Islamic monuments (Hazratbal Mosque, Khanqah-e-Moula / Khanqah Shah-i-Hamdan, Jamia Masjid) on a dedicated Day 5 heritage tour, plus the evening shikara ride on Dal Lake.
  • Avantipura Ruins — the 9th-century Hindu temple complex on the drive from Srinagar to Pahalgam, often missed by first-time visitors to Kashmir. The carved stonework and the scale of the double-temple compound are among the most impressive pre-Islamic ruins in the valley.

Important Notes

  • Best Season: Year-round — but the character of the tour changes by season. Spring (March–May): Tulip Garden bloom in April, blossoming orchards in Pahalgam, wildflowers in Gulmarg. Summer (June–August): Greenest landscapes, warmest weather, most accessible roads including Sonamarg. Autumn (September–October): Chinar colour change — the most atmospheric time for Srinagar heritage sightseeing; clear skies and good mountain views. Winter (December–February): Snow throughout, skiing in Gulmarg — Gondola runs weather permitting; Sonamarg may be inaccessible; Pahalgam is snowbound but beautiful. Contact us for winter-specific tailoring.
  • Activity Level: Easy. This is a road tour with walks of up to 2–3 km at each site. The Gondola ride (Day 3) takes you to 3,980m by cable car — no walking is required at altitude, but some visitors feel light-headedness at the Apharwat station (Phase 2 top). Drink water and take it slowly at the top. Sonamarg pony rides to Thajiwas Glacier are optional — the meadow floor is walkable on foot.
  • Tour Type: Fully private, year-round flexible. All transport by private vehicle. The tour operates entirely on your schedule with your dedicated guide and driver.
  • Gulmarg Gondola — Phase 2: The Phase 2 cable car to Apharwat Ridge (3,980m) is subject to closure in cloud, wind, or heavy snowfall. In summer it operates reliably most days; in winter it depends on snowpack and visibility. If Phase 2 is closed on your visit, Phase 1 is the standard alternative. Both phases are included in the tour price.
  • Cultural Etiquette: The Srinagar heritage circuit (Day 5) visits active Islamic places of worship — Hazratbal Mosque, Jamia Masjid, and Khanqah Shah-i-Hamdan. Dress modestly (cover shoulders, knees, and head — wraps available at the gate), remove shoes at mosque entrances, and follow your guide’s instructions.
  • Kashmiri Cuisine: Your guide can recommend the best Wazwan restaurants in Srinagar for the traditional multi-course lamb feast — one Wazwan dinner is strongly recommended and can be arranged on Day 4 or Day 5 evening.
