Ladakh Delight – 10 Days Tour (Nubra, Pangong & Tsomoriri)

Ladakh Delight — 10-Day Tour (Nubra, Pangong & Tsomoriri)

Ladakh is unlike anywhere else in India — a high-altitude cold desert at the convergence of the Himalayan, Karakoram, and Zanskar ranges, where Buddhist monasteries perch on eroded cliffs above river valleys that run turquoise under a sky of extraordinary blue. The distances are immense, the passes dramatic, and the lakes — Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Tsokar — among the most visually striking bodies of water anywhere in the world. This 10-day Ladakh Delight tour covers the full classical circuit: the Leh city and Lower Indus Valley monasteries, Nubra Valley via Khardung La, the excursion to Turtuk — India’s last village before the Pakistan border — Pangong Lake, and the rarely visited southern lakes of Tso Moriri and Tsokar before returning to Leh.
Two mandatory acclimatisation days are built into the start of this programme. Leh sits at 3,500m and the body requires at least 48 hours before longer drives and day excursions can be safely undertaken. The structured pacing — rest in Leh, then Lower Indus day-tour, then Nubra, Pangong, Tsomoriri — is the most physiologically sensible way to experience this range of terrain without altitude sickness derailing the journey. Summit Routes handles all Inner Line Permits for the restricted zones (Nubra, Turtuk, Pangong, Tsomoriri), camel ride in Hunder, and first aid with medical oxygen in the vehicle throughout.

Tour Highlights

Khardung La (5,359m) — the high pass on the Leh–Nubra highway, one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The drive over the pass and down into the Shyok and Nubra valleys is among the most dramatic road journeys in India.

Nubra Valley & Hunder Sand Dunes — the unexpected desert landscape of the Nubra Valley, where cold-desert sand dunes sit at 3,048m between the Karakoram and the Ladakh ranges. A Bactrian camel (double-humped) ride on the dunes at Hunder is included.

Diskit Monastery & Future Buddha — the 14th-century Diskit Gompa above the Nubra Valley, and the 32-metre statue of Maitreya (Future Buddha) below it — one of the most striking religious monuments in Ladakh.

Turtuk Village — one of India’s most remote inhabited settlements, just a few kilometres from the Pakistan-controlled border, accessible only since 2010. The Balti culture, apricot orchards, and the historical Turtuk Palace make this the most culturally distinctive stop on the route.

Pangong Tso — the famous 134 km-long high-altitude lake that spans India and China, its colour shifting from deep blue to turquoise to emerald over the course of a single day. The overnight camp on the lake shore gives you both sunset and sunrise over the water.

Tso Moriri & Tsokar — two lakes in the restricted southern Changthang plateau that most Ladakh tours skip entirely. Tso Moriri at 4,522m is one of the highest enclosed lakes in the world; Tsokar is a salt lake ringed by geothermal springs and Changpa nomad camps. The drive between them through the Phuga hot springs and over the Tanglang La (5,328m) back to Leh is the finest single driving day of the programme.

Leh City & Monasteries — Leh Palace (17th century, the predecessor of the Potala in Lhasa), Shanti Stupa, and the monastery circuit of Thiksey, Hemis, Alchi, Lamayuru — the most complete monastery day-tour in Ladakh.

Important Notes

Best Season: June to September. The roads from Srinagar and Manali open in late May / early June depending on snowpack. July and August are the warmest and most accessible months for all zones including Turtuk and Tsomoriri. September offers excellent clarity and the lakes at their finest colour before the first autumn cold. The Pangong and Tsomoriri roads close in late October / November.

Acclimatisation — Non-Negotiable: Days 1 and 2 in Leh are full rest and acclimatisation days. Leh is at 3,500m — one of the highest commercial airports in the world. AMS risk is significant on arrival, particularly for visitors flying in from sea level. Do not plan strenuous activities on the day of arrival. The programme is structured so that the first demanding drive (to Nubra via Khardung La, 5,359m) does not happen until Day 4.

Activity Level: Easy. This is a road journey and cultural tour — no trekking, no technical terrain. The most physically demanding elements are the high-altitude drives (Khardung La at 5,359m, Tanglang La at 5,328m) and the cold nights at Pangong and Tsomoriri. All driving is in private vehicles with stops as required.

Inner Line Permits: Entry into the Nubra Valley, Turtuk, Pangong Lake, and Tso Moriri all require Inner Line Permits issued by the Ladakh administration. Summit Routes arranges all permits on your behalf before each excursion. Carry your original ID/passport at all times — permits are checked at military checkposts throughout the circuit.

Accommodation & Altitude: Pangong Vista Camp sits at approximately 4,350m on the lake shore — the highest overnight on the programme. Tso Moriri (4,522m) is slightly higher but the Hotel Grand Dolphin provides solid enclosed accommodation. Pack warm layers for both: nights at the high-altitude camps and lakeside hotels drop below 0°C even in July and August.

Cultural Respect: Ladakh is an active Buddhist community. Remove shoes at monastery entrances, dress modestly (no shorts or sleeveless tops at religious sites), do not enter restricted inner sanctums without permission, and follow your guide’s instructions. Photography of monks and ceremonies should be asked permission first.
