Explore Kashmir — 9-Day Heritage & Nature Tour

Kashmir is one of the most layered travel destinations in Asia — a valley where medieval Mughal architecture meets high-altitude alpine meadows, where the morning call to prayer drifts across Dal Lake and by afternoon you are walking through wildflower pastures above 3,000m. The Explore Kashmir 9-Day Tour is designed to do justice to that range. It is not a standard circuit of famous sights; it is a structured journey through the valley’s distinct regions — Srinagar’s historic city and lake culture, the Pahalgam and Aru valleys in the Lidder River corridor, the skiing meadows of Gulmarg, and the ancient Hindu temple site at Naranag with its little-visited highland treks — woven together with enough time at each location to actually feel the place rather than photograph it from a bus window.

The programme runs across all three of Kashmir’s principal seasons. In spring (April–May) the valley is lit by tulip gardens and blossoming orchards; in summer (June–August) the meadows are at their greenest and the high pastures accessible; in autumn (September–October) the chinar trees turn gold and the air sharpens. Summit Routes is based in Srinagar and has been running private Kashmir tours since 2011 — every guide, driver, and houseboat host on this programme is local.

Tour Highlights

  • Srinagar Heritage Circuit — Mughal Gardens (Nishat, Chashma Shahi, Pari Mahal), Hazratbal Mosque, Khanqah-e-Moula, Jamia Masjid, and a shikara ride on Dal Lake. Two full evenings and a dedicated Day 8 heritage morning cover the city properly.
  • Dal Lake Houseboat Stay — Three nights in Srinagar on a traditional wooden houseboat or at Hotel Ash Vale depending on availability and preference. The houseboat experience — cedar-panelled interiors, breakfast served on the lake, a silence broken only by the paddle of a shikara — is one of the defining experiences of a Kashmir visit.
  • Pahalgam & Betaab Valley — The Lidder River valley at its most cinematic: Chandanwari gorge, Betaab Valley’s lush meadows, and the ancient Avantipura Ruins on the drive south.
  • Aru Valley & Lidderwat Day Hike — Two nights in the quieter, less-touristed Aru Valley, followed by a 9 km guided day hike to Lidderwat Meadow — alpine grassland ringed by snow peaks and pine forest at 3,175m. Guide, lunch, and trekking poles included.
  • Gulmarg Gondola — One of the highest cable cars in the world, rising to the Apharwat Ridge at 3,980m. Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori) and Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat) tickets included. Weather dependent.
  • Naranag & Marchoi Meadow Trek — A guided day trek from the ancient Naranag temple ruins (800 CE) into Marchoi, a pristine highland pasture framed by glaciers and ridgelines that most Kashmir visitors never reach.

Important Notes

  • Best Season: April to October. Spring (April–May) is the peak flower season — tulip gardens, blossoming apricot orchards, and the first green on the high meadows. Summer (June–August) is the most popular period — the Gondola operates fully, Aru and Lidderwat are accessible, and the days are long and warm. Autumn (September–October) offers the most dramatic colour — the chinar trees that line the Srinagar boulevards and encircle the Dal Lake gardens turn gold and orange, and the air above 2,500m becomes sharp and clear. Winter visits (November–March) are possible but tailored differently — contact us for snow season options in Gulmarg.
  • Activity Level: Easy to Moderate. The majority of the programme is sightseeing and drives. The two active days are Day 4 (Lidderwat Meadow hike, 9 km round trip, 4–5 hours, 125m ascent from Aru) and Day 7 (Marchoi Meadow trek from Naranag, approximately 10–12 km round trip). Both are manageable for people in normal health with no prior trekking experience. Good walking shoes are sufficient for Day 4; sturdy footwear is recommended for Day 7.
  • Tour Type: Fully private, fully guided. All transport throughout the 9 days is by private Innova. The tour does not operate as a group departure — it runs entirely on your schedule with your dedicated guide and driver. Departure dates are flexible year-round.
  • Gulmarg Gondola — Weather Dependent: The Phase 2 cable car (Kongdoori to Apharwat, 3,980m) is subject to closure in cloud, wind, or heavy snowfall. In peak summer the Gondola operates reliably most days. Summit Routes arranges tickets in advance; in the event of closure, alternative activities in Gulmarg are substituted.
  • Houseboat Accommodation: Days 6–8 in Srinagar offer a houseboat stay on Dal Lake as the preferred option. Houseboats are graded; Summit Routes places guests in well-maintained traditional houseboats with attached bathrooms and hot water. If you have a preference for standard hotel accommodation, Hotel Ash Vale or similar is available as an alternative — confirm at booking.
  • Cultural Etiquette: Several sites on this tour are active places of Islamic worship — Hazratbal Mosque, Khanqah-e-Moula, Jamia Masjid, Baba Reshi Shrine, and others. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), remove shoes at entrances, and follow your guide’s instructions at religious sites. This is standard practice and your guide will prepare you before each visit.
  • Kashmiri Cuisine: Meals at the hotels include both Kashmiri and standard Indian options. Ask your guide to recommend Wazwan restaurants in Srinagar for the full multi-course feast — one Wazwan dinner in Srinagar is among the most memorable meals in India and is highly recommended on Day 8.
