Tso Moriri high-altitude lake at 4,522m — India Grand Circuit 20-Day Tour

India Grand Circuit — 20-Day Private Tour (Delhi · Kashmir · Ladakh)

The India Grand Circuit is Summit Routes’ most complete north India journey — a single, seamless 20-day private tour that connects three of the subcontinent’s greatest travel experiences: the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur), the Kashmir Valley (Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Kargil), and the Ladakh plateau (Leh, Nubra Valley, Turtuk, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri). No tour operator in India covers this full arc — from the Taj Mahal to Pangong Lake, from Mughal imperial architecture to high-altitude Buddhist monasteries — under one seamlessly managed private programme.

The circuit works because it follows an internally logical route: fly into Delhi, cover the classical Golden Triangle circuit by road over four days, take a short domestic flight to Srinagar, traverse the Kashmir Valley and ascend to Sonamarg, cross the Zojila Pass into Kargil, drive through the Lamayuru and Lower Indus Valley monastery belt into Leh, and complete the Ladakh high-altitude circuit before flying out of Leh back to Delhi for onward international departure. The entire circuit moves from south to north-east, gaining altitude progressively — the most physiologically sensible way to build acclimatisation from the Mughal plains to the Changthang plateau.

This is a fully private tour. Every vehicle, every guide, every room has been arranged exclusively for your group. There are no shared coaches, no fixed group departures, and no compromises on pace. The maximum group size is 10; the programme runs on your chosen dates within the recommended season windows.

Why This Circuit Works

Most travellers attempting a combined India–Kashmir–Ladakh journey piece together separate itineraries from different operators, lose days to disorganisation at the joins, and arrive in Leh without proper altitude preparation. The India Grand Circuit solves each of these problems: one operator, one vehicle network, one guide handoff system, and a built-in progressive acclimatisation schedule. The Zojila overland crossing from Sonamarg to Kargil — rather than flying directly to Leh — adds two days of extraordinary mountain road driving and gives the body a crucial extra 48 hours at intermediate altitude (2,700m to 3,500m) before Khardung La.

Tour Highlights — All Three Circuits

Golden Triangle (Days 1–4)

  • Red Fort & Jama Masjid, Delhi — the twin centrepieces of Shah Jahan’s 17th-century Mughal capital: the great sandstone palace-fort on the Yamuna and India’s largest mosque opposite. The combination of military scale and religious grandeur defines the Mughal aesthetic from the first day.
  • Taj Mahal, Agra — built 1631–1653 as the mausoleum of Mumtaz Mahal. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Visited in the early morning for softest light and fewest crowds. The full proportional impact of entering the gateway and seeing the monument in elevation above the platform is not adequately communicated by any photograph.
  • Agra Fort & Fatehpur Sikri — the red sandstone Mughal residence with its unmatched elevated view of the Taj Mahal; and the ghost Mughal capital built and abandoned by Akbar within 14 years, surviving intact in sandstone as one of the most extraordinary architectural sites in India.
  • Amber Fort, Jaipur — the great Rajput hilltop fortress above Maota Lake, with its Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors), hilltop battlements, and elephant or jeep ascent. The Rajput aesthetic — fortified palaces, painted havelis, pink-stucco bazaar streets — is as distinct from the Mughal as it is from anything in the West.

Kashmir Valley (Days 5–12)

  • Dal Lake Shikara, Srinagar — the classic Kashmir arrival: an evening glide across Dal Lake in a traditional wooden shikara as the Zabarwan Hills glow behind the Boulevard houseboats. Included on both Day 6 and Day 7.
  • Srinagar Heritage Circuit — the full Mughal Gardens sequence (Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chashma Shahi, Pari Mahal), the Old Islamic City (Hazratbal Mosque, Khanqah Shah-i-Hamdan, Jamia Masjid), and the old town’s carved walnut-wood architecture.
  • Pahalgam & the Lidder Valley — the pine-shaded river town at 2,130m, with full-day excursions to Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, and Chandanwari gorge at the head of the Lidder.
  • Gulmarg Gondola — Phase 1 & 2 — the cable car rising from Gulmarg (2,650m) to the Apharwat Ridge (3,980m), with views across the Pir Panjal range and — on clear days — Nanga Parbat on the northwestern horizon.
  • Sonamarg & Thajiwas Glacier — the golden meadow at the head of the Sind Valley, where the glacier descends to the meadow floor beneath encircling snow ridges. One overnight gives both afternoon and morning light on the valley.
  • Zojila Pass (3,528m) & Drass — the dramatic mountain pass between Kashmir and Ladakh, through the world’s second coldest inhabited settlement and the Kargil War Memorial at Drass, before descending into the arid Kargil district.
  • Kargil — the gateway town of western Ladakh, with its mix of Shia Muslim and Buddhist heritage and its position on the ancient Silk Road corridor between Srinagar and Leh.

Ladakh (Days 13–20)

  • Lamayuru & Lower Indus Valley Monasteries — Lamayuru (the oldest monastery in Ladakh, on its dramatic moonscape cliff), Alchi (UNESCO-listed, with rare 11th-century wall paintings), and the Indus-Zanskar confluence, on the drive from Kargil to Leh.
  • Khardung La (5,359m) & Nubra Valley — one of the highest motorable passes in the world, descending into the unexpected cold-desert dune landscape of the Nubra Valley with its Bactrian camel ride at Hunder.
  • Turtuk Village — India’s last village before the Pakistan border, accessible only since 2010. The Balti culture, apricot orchards, and the Turtuk Palace make this the most culturally distinctive stop in the circuit.
  • Pangong Tso (4,350m) — the 134 km-long high-altitude lake straddling India and China, its colour shifting from deep cobalt to electric turquoise across the course of a single day. Overnight on the lake shore for both sunset and sunrise.
  • Tso Moriri (4,522m) & Tsokar — the rarely visited southern Changthang lakes that most Ladakh tours skip. Tsokar’s salt flats and Changpa nomad camps; Tso Moriri’s extraordinary stillness at dawn; the Phuga geothermal hot springs between them — all on the finest driving day of the circuit.
  • Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa & Thiksey Monastery — the 17th-century Ladakhi royal palace above the old city, the Japanese-built stupa with its 360° panorama, and Thiksey’s twelve-storey gompa with its two-storey Maitreya statue.

Important Notes

  • Best Season: June to September — the only window when the Zojila Pass, the Sonamarg to Kargil crossing, and all Ladakh restricted zone roads are reliably open simultaneously. July and August are warmest and most accessible; September gives exceptional clarity and the high-altitude lakes at their finest colour. The Golden Triangle segment (Days 1–4) can be adjusted to a Delhi pre-trip if the group arrives in October–November — contact us to discuss.
  • Route Logic: The circuit is designed as a one-way journey: fly into Delhi DEL, fly Delhi to Srinagar SXR, drive Srinagar overland to Leh, fly Leh IXL back to Delhi DEL for international departure. This requires two short domestic flights (Delhi–Srinagar and Leh–Delhi), both booked independently of this package but coordinated by Summit Routes.
  • Acclimatisation: The progressive altitude gain is built into the structure. By the time visitors reach Leh on Day 12, they have spent two days at 2,700–3,500m (Sonamarg and Kargil) and driven through intermediate altitudes. Day 13 is still a mandatory rest day in Leh — Khardung La (5,359m) on Day 14 should not be attempted without it. First aid kit and medical oxygen are carried in the vehicle throughout the Ladakh segment.
  • Tour Type: Fully private, fully guided. All transport by private vehicle. No group coach, no fixed departure calendar. Runs on your schedule with dedicated guide and driver handoffs at each circuit boundary.
  • Inner Line Permits: All Inner Line Permits for the Ladakh restricted zones (Nubra, Turtuk, Pangong, Tsomoriri) are arranged by Summit Routes before each excursion. Carry original passport/ID at all times — checkposts throughout the Ladakh circuit.
  • Cultural Etiquette: This circuit passes through active Islamic mosques in Srinagar (Hazratbal, Jamia Masjid, Khanqah Shah-i-Hamdan) and active Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh (Lamayuru, Alchi, Thiksey). Dress modestly at all religious sites. Your guide will brief you at each.
