Langtang Valley Trek Nepal

Langtang Valley Trek: The Valley of Glaciers — Close to Kathmandu, Far From the Crowds

The Langtang Valley sits just 60km north of Kathmandu, tucked against the Tibetan border in Nepal’s first Himalayan national park. Despite being the closest major trek to the capital, it remains far less travelled than the Khumbu or Annapurna regions — offering genuine wilderness, deep cultural immersion in Tamang villages, and close-up views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m) from the valley floor.

The trek reaches Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870m — a traditional monastery village ringed by glaciers where you can buy yak cheese made on-site and watch the alpenglow turn Langtang Lirung pink at dusk. From Kyanjin, an acclimatisation hike to Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) delivers a 360° panorama across the entire Langtang range and into Tibet. For those who want more, Tsergo Ri (5,033m) is a full-day extension and one of the finest viewpoints in the Nepal Himalaya. Summit Routes runs the Langtang Valley Trek fully supported with local Tamang guides, private transport, and tea house accommodation throughout.

Why Langtang Valley

  1. Closest Major Trek to Kathmandu
The Langtang Valley is reachable from Kathmandu by road — no domestic flight required. The trek begins the day after arrival, making it ideal for tighter schedules without compromising on mountain scenery.
  2. Langtang Lirung at Eye Level
At 3,870m, Kyanjin Gompa sits directly beneath the south face of Langtang Lirung (7,227m). Few places in Nepal put you this close to a 7,000m peak from a tea house.
  3. Tamang Culture and Living Heritage
The Langtang Valley is the ancestral homeland of the Tamang people — a Buddhist community with deep ties to Tibet. Ancient mani walls, prayer flags, and working gompas line the trail throughout.
  4. Kyanjin Ri and Tsergo Ri
The acclimatisation day offers two summit options: Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) for a half-day return, or Tsergo Ri (5,033m) for a full-day push with views stretching into Tibet. Both are non-technical.
  5. Yak Cheese Dairy at Kyanjin Gompa
The Kyanjin cheese factory has operated since the 1950s. Fresh and aged yak cheese, churpi, and butter are available on-site — one of the most distinctive culinary experiences on any Nepal trek.
